Phillies relief pitcher Jonathan Papelbon doesn't think too highly about Yasiel Puig being on the all-star team this year.

"To me, it's an absolute joke," Papelbon told MLB Network Radio when asked about Puig's All-Star candidacy. "It's really kind of stupid if you ask me."

Sure, Puig hasn't even been playing in the bigs for a full month, but his numbers are out of this world & technically, the All-Star Game is supposed to be an exhibition game (that just determines home field advantage for the world series…which is ridiculous, but that's another post for another time). It's an exhibition game for the fans and who do the fans want to see? Yasiel Puig….one of the hottest players in baseball right now, a rookie sensation. Want to get people fired up about baseball? Want to get higher TV ratings? Puig is the answer….at least for this exhibition.

Personally, I think Papelbon should shut his trap & probably be thankful that he didn't pitch in the Phillies recent series against the Dodgers. I have a feeling that Puig possibly would have reminded us that Papelbon can turn into Papelbomb pretty quickly. Stick to pitching, dude….leave the all-star game to us…the fans.

Obviously Papelbon is a moron who talks when he shouldn't (his tag on my LJ isn't "papeldumbass" for nothing) but I actually agree with him here. It's the same thing that happened a few years ago when Strasburg came up in May/June/whenever that was. Yes, Puig is playing out of his mind. No, he should not be eligible for the ASG. He has not been up in the bigs for nearly long enough. It's not fair to whoever he'll edge out.

But whatever, the ASG itself is a joke anyway and the fact that it determines home field in the World Series is ridiculous.

ratings = money so it would be in MLB's best interest to see that he is somehow involved. I'm not saying a starter or a picked reserve, but you know some guys are going to be/get injured or just not want to play & that's where I say you use him to fill the hole in the roster.
